The Shiels Laboratory
Cells Drawing courtesy of Karlina Ozolina and Robert Nudds. A Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) swimming in an environmentally controlled respirometry tunnel where metabolic rate and swimming kinematics are simultaneously recorded.

Our research focuses on cardiac physiology in ectotherms and the mechanisms which maintain or adjust heart function in a changing environment. Such knowledge has application to cardiac health and disease and in predicting how organisms, populations, ecosystems and natural resources respond to environmental change and stressors.
